Vintage Société La Francaise Diamant Bike Badge

from £30.00

Winner of the first Tour de France in 1903

La Française (established in 1889) contributed to the development of the bicycle in France and in the world, as much by the diversity of its models as by the reputations of the riders who competed on them.

In 1890, Pierre-Victor Besse and François Trépier created the Société La Française in Paris, a factory for ‘velocipedes’ and spare parts. La Française also made motorcycles and cars.

In 1901, Maurice Garin (nicknamed the little chimney sweep) won Paris-Brest-Paris on a La Française bicycle, and in 1903 he also won the first Tour de France on a La Française bicycle.

This bicycle, the first winner of the Tour, was made of steel, handlebars without stem, without brakes or derailleur, braking was done by pedalling backwards.

The Diamant brand appeared in 1895, like cinema. It is represented by 5 diamonds on the frame plate. Diamond as per the shape of the diamond frame. In 1911, La Francaise again wins Paris-Brest-Paris with Emile Georget.

After the First World War, in 1919, La Française became part of the La Sportive consortium, a group of several French brands

In 1923 the company Alcyon bought La Française but continued to produce the brand's bicycles. The brand was involved in cycle racing until 1955.
